What is email triage?

Email triage is the practice of quickly sorting incoming email by type and urgency so that each message gets the right handling: answer now, answer later, hand to someone else, or ignore.

The word comes from medicine, where triage means deciding who needs attention first. Applied to an inbox, it means separating the handful of messages that need thought from the many that need a quick standard answer and the many more that need nothing at all.

A simple triage pass

For each message, ask three questions. Does it need a reply at all? If so, is the answer already known and written down? And who is the right person to send it? Messages with a known answer can be handled fast. Messages that need judgment get set aside for focused time. Newsletters, receipts, and notifications get filtered out so they stop competing for attention.

How software helps

Triage is repetitive, which makes it a good job for software. inboxr classifies each incoming email by subject, such as billing, sales, support, or account, and reads the sender's tone. It routes the message to the agent you assigned to that topic, drafts a reply, and scores its confidence. Ignore rules and automatic bounce filtering keep noise out before any drafting happens. What reaches you is a queue of drafts, labeled by topic, that you can filter and work through.
